PhotoBiotics' objective is to develop improved approaches to PDT based upon synthesising new, more efficient and safer photosensitising agents and developing better ways of targeting them to their sites of action. PDT has an established role in the treatment of some cancers and AMD and is being researched in a number of other areas including certain skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis, interventional cardiology and infectious diseases. Consequently the market for PhotoBiotics products is potentially very broad. We know however that in many cases the inherent novelty of PDT and the obvious practical constraints of needing to irradiate a lesion with laser light means that PDT will often be confined to market niches. Consequently we have defined the market for PDT in two parts:

  • The existing market as defined by the applications for some of the leading products - QLT's Visudyne (verteporfin) for AMD and related ophthalmic disorders and Photofrin (porfimer sodium) and Scotia's Foscan (temoporfin) in cancer

  • The potential market defined by the other applications either under research or proposed by PhotoBiotics or other companies.
