Dr Gokhan Yahioglu

Dr Gokhan Yahioglu obtained his PhD at Brunel University under the guidance of Professor Peter G. Sammes (a former Vice-President for research at SmithKline and French), working on the design and synthesis of new molecular beacons for application in DNA assays. His affair with porphyrin chemistry and synthesis began at Brunel with Dr Milgrom, looking at discotic liquid crystals, work which led to the synthesis of a class of novel porphyrins.

Dr Yahioglu then went to Cambridge university to join the internationally known group of Professor Andrew Holmes, working on porphyrins as dyes in light-emitting polymers for use as ultra-thin display materials. The work produced a series of novel porphyrin polymers and more importantly led to the use of phosphorescent porphyrins as dopants to dramatically improve the efficiency of light-emitting devices.

Since 1997 he has been at the chemistry department at Imperial college, working with Professor David Phillips and Dr Lionel Milgrom on the synthesis of novel sensitisers for use in PDT.
